Margaret E. Rushing midwife records, 1899-1937.

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of a typescript of the records of Margaret E. Rushing's work as a midwife in Savannah, Georgia. The records were compiled mostly in 1930 from receipts kept by Mrs. Rushing; the time period covered is 1899-1937. Rushing performed most of her work in the Old Fort section of Savannah, an Irish neighborhood during the early 20th century, located near East Broad Street where Fort Wayne once stood (for more information on Savannah's Irish neighborhoods, see "From the Old Fort to Yamacraw, Savannah's immigrant population sank roots into new homeland," Savannah Morning News 3/17/2004). The early records include the parents' names, address, the infant's name and gender, and the date. After 1924, the records include the date (sometimes including the time), address, age, place of birth, and profession for each of the parents, the name and gender of the baby, the total number of children, and the number of living children. The microfilm roll, X-1545-01, also contains materials from other collections; this collection appears as the fourth on the roll. These records were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Savannah Public Library in 1989.
